Short answer
Wet carpet can often be saved if the water was clean, like from a supply line or water heater, and drying starts quickly. Carpet soaked by dirty water or sewage, or left wet for days, usually needs to be replaced. The pad underneath is more often replaced than the carpet itself, because it holds water like a sponge.
Why does the source of the water matter?
Clean water from a burst supply line, a water heater or rain through a window gives carpet the best chance. Water from a washing machine or dishwasher carries more contamination, and sewage backups or outside floodwater carry the most. Carpet soaked by sewage or floodwater is generally not safe to keep.
How long can carpet stay wet before it is ruined?
The sooner drying starts, the better. Mold can start within 24 to 48 hours when carpet and pad stay wet, and the longer water sits, the more likely the backing separates and odors set in. Fast extraction is what makes saving the carpet possible.
What about the pad underneath?
The pad soaks up far more water than the carpet and is hard to dry in place. It is often replaced even when the carpet is saved. We will tell you plainly if the pad needs to go instead of cleaning over it.
How do professionals dry and clean wet carpet?
Standing water is extracted with professional equipment, moisture is pulled from the carpet, pad and subfloor, and the room is dried with air movement and dehumidifiers. Drying is checked with moisture meters, not by touch. Once dry, carpet can be cleaned with hot water extraction.
